  1. India's cybercrime agency warns banks of AI-driven fraud at machine speed

    Source: The New Indian Express

India's Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), under the Home Ministry, has warned banks, non-bank lenders and fintech firms that hackers are using AI agents (software that can act on its own) to push fraudulent transfers worth crores of rupees through payment systems at machine speed. Firms must report such incidents to CERT-In, the national cyber-security team, within six hours.

Why it mattersIf you bank or pay digitally in India, this is about your money: regulators are pushing lenders to tighten payment controls and transaction limits, which may mean extra checks for customers but fewer large-scale thefts.

Nigeria Customs says it is using AI to track online scams and fake news

    Source: Vanguard (Nigeria)

The Nigeria Customs Service says it has begun using AI and digital data-tracking tools against fake news and online scams, and works with other agencies to identify and apprehend those spreading misleading information, according to Vanguard. Officials said AI is also used to rate the risk of imported goods and to analyse public sentiment.

Why it mattersFake customs auctions and clearance scams cost people money, so better detection could help. It also shows governments using AI to monitor what people say online, which raises questions about how 'misleading' is defined.

  4. India weighs pre-release safety checks for the most powerful AI models

    Source: NDTV

India's planned AI law may require makers of "frontier" models (the most capable AI systems) to show safeguards are in place, possibly through sandbox testing, before release, NDTV reports, citing officials. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said a consultation paper on the law will be released in the coming weeks; deepfakes, financial fraud and psychological harm are also expected to be covered.

Why it mattersThe rules could shape how AI tools reach India's hundreds of millions of internet users and what protection people get against AI-driven fraud and deepfakes. The public consultation will be a chance for citizens and small businesses to have a say.

  5. India's traders' body and Nasscom launch AI and cyber-fraud campaign for small shops

    Source: KNN India

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) and IT industry body Nasscom signed an agreement to run a nationwide campaign teaching traders and small businesses to use AI and guard against cyber fraud, aiming to reach village level, KNN India reports. CAIT says India has more than nine crore (90 million) traders.

Why it mattersFor a shopkeeper, AI can help with stock, pricing and costs, but more digital use also means more scams. Free training that covers both could help small Indian businesses earn more and lose less to fraud.

  7. Brazil's presidential runoff puts AI, deepfakes, Meta under scrutiny

    Source: UPI

Brazil votes in its presidential runoff on Sunday 25 October. UPI reports the electoral court received a record 804 election-related legal filings, many over deepfakes (AI-made fake videos, images or voices), and Meta faces scrutiny over how its platforms treat the two candidates. A Brazilian fact-checker counted 920 AI-made or AI-altered political posts during the first round.

Why it mattersBrazil is one of the first big elections where AI fakes are a central fight, and courts there have banned deepfakes in campaign ads. What happens there will shape how other countries handle AI in their own elections.
