Grok and GPT split on the midterms, AI turns old PHP bugs into a crisis, and Nvidia's backstops face a test

  1. 01

Forced to pick, Grok's AI model chooses Republicans. OpenAI's picks Democrats.

    Source: TechCrunch

A Convovo study reported by TechCrunch found that, when pushed via the API to name one candidate, Grok 4.7 picked the Republican in 92% of answers and OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol picked the Democrat in 97%, agreeing in fewer than 10% of nearly 500 races. The consumer apps refused to answer; OpenAI says the API test with a forcing prompt doesn't reflect the ChatGPT experience.

Why it mattersIf you build on a model's API, you inherit its leanings and its choice of sources, so products that touch politics, news or advice need their own guardrails and evals rather than relying on the consumer app's refusals.

The PHP Meltdown Shows How AI Makes Bugs More Exploitable

    Source: WIRED

WIRED reports that AI-assisted research turned years-old PHP issues (dubbed PHP2Shell) into practical exploits, and Cloudflare saw millions of exploitation attempts within hours of disclosure. The PHP Foundation says it has seen no successful exploitation so far, and researchers stress that human expertise was still essential.

Why it mattersKnown-but-'unexploitable' bugs are now a live risk, so patch windows are shrinking. Teams running PHP or other internet-facing stacks should treat old, deprioritised security issues as due for a fresh look.

Pennsylvania will require labels on AI-generated ads

    Source: The Verge

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro signed the Artificial Intelligence Deceptive Advertising Act, which requires ads that have been significantly modified or generated by AI, whether image, video, audio or text, to carry a disclosure label, according to The Verge.

Why it mattersThis is another state-level AI disclosure law. Ad-tech, creative-tool and marketing teams should build AI-content labelling into their workflows now rather than retrofitting it state by state.

TikTok U.S. hunts for multiple gigawatts of computing capacity, sources tell CNBC

    Source: CNBC

CNBC reports, citing two sources, that TikTok's U.S. joint venture is sounding out multiple gigawatts of compute over the coming years, with one source putting the target at four gigawatts by the early 2030s. A spokesperson said Oracle Cloud Infrastructure remains its primary provider.

Why it mattersConsumer platforms, not just AI labs, are now competing for data-center power, which keeps pressure on GPU and capacity prices for everyone else buying compute.

Rapidly scaling online storage to serve over 1 billion ChatGPT users (Part II)

    Source: OpenAI

Vendor-published: OpenAI's engineering post on Habitat, its internal storage platform for ChatGPT, covers multi-tenancy, global caching and Azure Cosmos DB, and claims 12x faster reads.

Why it mattersThis is OpenAI's own account, so treat the performance claim as self-reported. It's still a useful reference for teams designing per-user state and caching for AI apps at scale.

Beyond tree cover: mapping the world's forest types

    Source: DeepMind

Vendor-published: Google DeepMind describes a global map that sorts every 10-metre patch of land on Earth into distinct forest types.

Why it mattersFiner-grained forest data matters for deforestation monitoring, supply-chain compliance and carbon projects. Climate and geospatial builders should check how the data can be accessed and what its licence allows.

Nvidia's role as AI financier faces first big test as neoclouds take market hit

    Source: CNBC

Markets: CNBC reports that Nvidia's backstops for neoclouds and its guarantee of up to $105 billion for a proposed OpenAI data center in Ohio are being tested, as shares of CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN are down at least 30% this month. It says Nvidia's stock is off 7.6% in October.

Why it mattersMuch of the AI buildout now depends on Nvidia's balance sheet as well as its chips, so stress at the neoclouds could affect GPU availability and cloud pricing. Not investment advice.

What some of Anthropic's backers are worth before its IPO

    Source: TechCrunch

Markets: TechCrunch, citing Bloomberg and a source, tallies paper gains for Anthropic investors at its latest $965 billion private valuation ahead of an expected IPO. For example, it says Spark Capital's $75 million 2023 stake is now worth $7 billion and Menlo Ventures' stake is worth $14 billion.

Why it mattersReturns like these keep venture money flowing into frontier labs and AI startups, and an Anthropic listing would give public markets a new benchmark for valuing AI labs. Not investment advice.
