    Source: Eye Radio

East African Community ministers approved regional AI and digital transformation strategies and a foundational AI module for undergraduates in every discipline, covering basic knowledge, practical use and responsible use. They also backed a regional AI network of universities and AI certification benchmarks for Kiswahili; the EAC's own press release has details.

Why it mattersIf adopted, students across East Africa, not just computer science majors, would graduate with basic AI skills that employers increasingly ask for. Kiswahili benchmarks could push AI tools to work better for millions of Swahili speakers.

Türkiye plans to let AI score students' open-ended exam answers

    Source: Daily Sabah

Türkiye's education ministry plans a school-based monitoring system for middle and high school students in Turkish, maths and science, with AI used to score answers to open-ended questions, Daily Sabah reports. The plan is set out in the 2027 Presidential Annual Program; the national ABIDE skills study will also move online.

Why it mattersAI marking could give faster feedback to students, but parents and teachers will want to know how accurate and fair it is before it shapes grades. Other countries weighing AI in exams will watch how this works.

  3. Berkeley Fields medallist stops grading homework, citing AI use

    Source: The Daily Californian

Richard Borcherds, a Fields Medal-winning mathematician at UC Berkeley, told the student paper he now grades homework only on whether it was handed in, because so many students used AI to get top scores. The university says it tried AI-detection tools such as Turnitin but found them not reliable enough to use campus-wide.

Why it mattersSchools and universities everywhere face the same problem: if AI can do the homework, teachers have to rethink how they check what students actually learn.
