IIT Madras paper warns AI could threaten entry-level jobs in BPOs, IT and banking
Source: The Times of India
The Times of India reports a white paper from IIT Madras, one of India's top engineering institutes, warning that AI could threaten entry-level jobs in BPOs (outsourced call-centre and back-office work), IT services and banking.
Why it mattersEntry-level BPO, IT and banking roles pay the first salaries for millions of graduates in India and similar hubs. The paper is a signal to invest in skills AI is slower to replace, not to panic-quit.
Tech layoffs near 2 lakh worldwide in 2026 as big tech pivots to AI
Source: Mint
Mint, citing industry trackers, says nearly 196,000 tech workers (about 2 lakh) have been hit by layoffs worldwide so far in 2026, with Intel, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Cisco, Oracle and Meta among the companies cutting. It says firms are trimming older operations to pay for AI data centres and model training, and that Indian IT services firms have slowed hiring of freshers.
Why it mattersFor tech workers and graduates, especially in India, the message is that companies now value AI skills and output per employee over headcount, so retraining matters more than ever.
The Indian workers filming their work to train AI
Source: BBC
The BBC profiles workers in India, such as a Bengaluru barber, who are paid to wear head cameras that film their hands at work. The footage is sold to tech firms to train 'physical AI', meaning AI that controls robots in the real world. The BBC says hundreds of thousands of people worldwide do this kind of work.
Why it mattersIt's a new kind of paid gig, but the skills being recorded today could help robots do some of these jobs later. It also raises questions about pay, consent and who owns the data people create.
